(faculty, curriculum, etc.)

The Program in English as a Second Language (TESL) in the College of Liberal Arts offers a course of study leading to the Master of Arts. Degree holders are qualified to teach ESL to adults at the college or university level. This program was rated among the top ten such M.A. programs internationally in an independent survey undertaken in 1992. Since we are a comparatively small program, admitting only 8 to 12 new students each year, we are able to provide more extensive individual attention as well as greater opportunity for teaching assistant positions than is found in other M.A. programs nationally.

* Required Coursework for the M.A. in ESL

Ling 5001: Introduction to Linguistics (4 credits)
TESL 5721: English as a Second Language: Methods (3 credits)

TESL 5401, 5402: Language Analysis for Teachers of ESL (4 credits, 4 credits)
Ling 5505: Intro to Second-Language Acquisition (3 credits)
